In the video above, you’ll see me embarrass myself
I actually tell you to get complete pull ups, but I lose strength by the end of the set – guess that’s what I guess for having to do 3 re-takes, each one requiring about 10-12 pull ups.
hehe…
No, seriously, I think you’ll love this set, and I think you’ll feel challenged, just as I did. More importantly, I hope you’ll learn something extremely valuable related to both your exercise programming/goal setting and your nutritional habits.
Tomorrow I’ll be back with a great video for you, but, for now, please leave your comments below. I want to help, but you have to ‘raise your hand’ first

I’m always interested in nutrition…so spill the beans already! (Pun intended.)

I’ll be happy when I can get one pull-up with good form. But I’m getting closer.
I’m looking forward to hearing from Isabel, particularly regarding raw vs cooked foods.
Thank you for all the great information. Looking forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Dr. k, I really enjoy your posts. You really do know what u r talking about. This week when addressing nutrition could u touch on ulcerative colitus. Specifically on what to eat and what not to eat. I’ve dealt with this disease for 13 yrs now. Just would like to get some new insight.
Thanks,
Chris

I am studying to become a personal trainer and in tern comes the questions about nutrition. There is so much conflicting information on when to eat. For instance if I want to work out should I eat just before my next meal or one hour after. Does working out at a certain time after or before eating bring a different result?

I like the idea of correlating what occurs “inside” to what you see on the outside. In fact, as you describe so well, understanding how the body responds from the inside out can reinforce a training-nutrition regimen because you get the big picture, as if you are excercising in front of an ultrasound watching the way everything “works”.

I agree with marilyn, I’ll be very happy when I can do one pull up!
Thanks for the post, great tips as usual! Nutrition has always been a big issue for me as I have IBS and am intolerant to dairy and wheat.
On top of that I also have quite a high level of acidity in my stomach and have found some different information on this like mixing protein with carbs, or not. Any info on that would be great!
Kareem, Sound advice as usual unfortunately you would be hard pressed to find a monkey bar set in my park. Oh well next time…

Thanks Dr K for your video. I too want to hear about nutrition and further encouragement in the form of videos. Your website is very thorough and much better prepared than many other programs out there.

When to cook your vegetables and when to eat it raw?? I’m interested in that. I thought you can always do one or the other, like whatever you prefer. Also if there’s a way to test ourselves so that we know to which foods are we allergic to? I may be eating something that’s generally healthy but if I’m allergic to it, then it’s harmful for me.
That’s no excuse Dr K!…serously..good job..We’re all keen to hear more about nutrition. I’m curious about constant conflicting ideas about carbs in the diet..
Thanks for the post..love them!

Have Isabel’s book, but I’ve been using Jon Benson’s nutrition plan for years and like it a lot. Not to say I won’t look at Isabel’s and see how I could combine the two. Probably possible as they both have sound advice to give everyone.
Chin-ups … I’ll nail those su****s one of these days, this year! Nick Nilsson gave me a nice “recipe” on how to get the first one. Once that’s done, I’ll get more “easily”. I’ve already gone from holding on for 15 seconds to 20, need to get to 30 before going on. My main problem is grip strength, so I’m working on that first.
I will set myself a new goal for after the chin-up success at home: doing some play-ground chins next summer totally show off! Hey, why not? How many women actually do chins? I’ve wanted to since Terminator II (and all who have seen that one will remember Linda H in her loony-cell doing them).

Great posts, Dr K.
I am glad you mentioned irritable bowel syndrome. My doctor thinks I have a mild form of it (the diarrhea version). This means I have to eat more soluble fibre (which seems to help), but be careful with insoluble fibre. Problem: most fruit and veg have tonnes of insoluble fibre! So, I have to limit how much of these I eat in a sitting/day, else, I could end up with….whoosh!
Loads of fitness blogs talk about eating lots of fruit and veg to gain muscle and burn fat, but I (and probably other people) would really appreciate if you talk about IBS and diet, and tips on dealing with the problems, such as those I have described.
Thanks!
peggy
I have Isabells program and I think the information and her program are excellent. Anyone who wants to improve their nutrition ,lose weight, keep it off for good, and feel great will love it. Besides that I have been very happy to see quick workouts that we can do in parks or just out doors. Thanks for all the great info Kareem. Peggy

Hi Dr K
I would like to know a couple things. I have a hard time trying to get 5 meals a day in on the days that I have to work. In my profession I may not have a single second to stop and if I do my meals will most certainly not come at the right times. Do we need to eat 5 or 6 x’s a day or is 3 okay.
I work out alot and I am not losing weightvery quickly at all. Weights or cardio, I am sweating buckets when I am done. I don’t know what to do. I don’t eat poorly, I don’t think. I don’t want to give up. I want to be an example to my family.

What brands of yogurt are probiotic?
Why is milk bad for me?
Whole wheat bread – not the super food we thought it was, so is whole grain bread any better? What do we buy? I know one kind is Ezekial sprouted grain. What other kinds should we use?

actually.. yes i am very intereted in learning more WHEN to eat cooked versus raw? and also, the prefect timing for eating .. i usually train in the morning about 2 hours after a faily big breakfast and then eat another meal within the hour after training… but isnt that too much food too soon? i have seen evindence that it takes apprx 5 hours for food to leave your stomach that is the time for it to digest properly.. so if i DO eat every 3h30-4 hours.. then i have never let my system finish the digestion of any meal.. and them my bowels are all weird :/ … so I dont know i am having trouble finding the solution here.. and yes i do have food allergies.. finding out about a few of them REALLY hepled me !! cashews NO !

I have Isabel`s The diet solution program and wanted to ask about ho cna i measure food properly cuz the cup thing doesn`t quite fit me and because i`m a vegan i`m sometimes afraid i`m not gettin all the right nutrients from the food i eat as some foods like beans are reallly hig on caloris but dont fill me up so good.Thx

Hello Dr K.
I saw something the other day about low thyroid and how if you have a thyroid problems you shouldn’t eat cruciferous vegetables raw? But what if you take meds for thyroid will it still hinder weight loss? Maybe Isabell can throw something in about that.
Thank you
JM
Thanks for the great post Dr. K and for bringing Isabel on this week.
I have a lot of questions about nutrition. That is one of my biggest struggles because no matter how good I think I’m eating and working out, I still don’t seem to be dropping a lot of weight.
One specific question I have is how to transition from an extreme fat loss program like XFLD into a more moderate nutrition and exercise program. Could Isabel talk about how quickly and to what degree we should increase caloric intake and what kind of foods/variation we should be getting?
Also, how much protein is necessary based on bodyweight?? Or is there another way this is determined?
I second the earlier question about meals 5x a day. I often have to combine them because I don’t have the time to stop and grab a bite but I have done a better job in spreading my calories out– a major problem for me in the past.
Finally, please have Isabel offer some nutritional advice for vegetarians. I struggle to find good non-soy sources of protein (other than eggs and limited dairy) to eat. Soy used to be my primary source until I found out it actually has been holding me back from my goals rather than helping. Is there any soy that is good to consume? How do I know? I eat tons of veggies but I fear that the protein in them is not sufficient enough. Since dropping soy, eggs have been my primary source. Just looking for other suggestions.
THANKS!
Kym Hutcheon
Kareem, no worries. We all know you’re incredibly strong from your other videos. I’m still freaked out by that press up where you popped up and changed direction.
Isabel definitely knows her stuff. She’s a certified nutritionist for a start. Way too many people faking it out there. Since you asked, I’d like to know if she has any comments about the extended use of adaptogens on adrenal health. Too much of a good thing…?
Marianne
Dr. K, Great info. I know that I suffer from food sensitives. A decade ago I was very ill. When I’d go to the doctors for help the medicine they would prescribe to treat my symptoms seemed to just make matters worse. So I took matters into my own hands. I researched diet and worked really hard at improving my and my family’s diet. My whole family eats a much cleaner diet now and my health is much better but I feel like I still have not pin pointed what foods I am most sensitive to. Gluten and gliadin appear two items that I do not tolerate. Raw dairy does not seem to have any adverse effect on me. I try to stay away from all pasteurized dairy products. Are there tests or ways to determine food sensitives that are more concrete than trial and error? Thanks, M

I am so frustrated now because I workout 6 days a week both weight bearing and cardio exercise. I don’t eat sweets and i don’t drink soda. I don’t eat anything with high fructose corn syrup or anything hydrogenated. I rarely buy anything in a package. I eat normal portions. I eat my vegetables, protein, and carbs in balance. Yet, I am 50 lbs over weight and don’t loose weight. The only time I’ve ever lost weight was when I quit eating for a week because I was ill and couldnt eat, but as soon as I was well and started eating all the weight came right back on. I have to eat to sustain myself but I am 5 ft 4 in tall and should weigh around 125 lbs but never have been at that weight since I was 18 years old. I’ve been working out since March 2008. Nothing seems to work for me. I’m almost to the point of giving up. I bought your program and am a member of your website, but still nothing has changed.
Please help me!

Great post. I’ve heard of Isabel Del Rios! She definitely knows her stuff.
Thanks again Dr. K.

Good info on food allergies. I refer to this as cutting out ‘WADS’. Wheat, Alcohol, Dairy and Sugar.
Whenever I consume any of the above, I end up bloated for a week. When I get into training and cut out all four groups, I notice dramatic results. It can be really tough, especially for those of us working in corporate environments, where stress, fatigue and bad foods are combined in one place.
Helps to be reminded. Keep up with the good info!

Hey, Dr. K! Great video. Thanks. I love your workouts ad pitch them to all my friends who want to change their bodies. I can do things now at 51 that I have never been able to do, am showing arms this summer for the first time in 27 years, and weigh less than I have in decades. I have lost more than 80 pounds and only have about 30 more to go. I am completely off the high blood pressure mediation I have taken for 10 years and have been able to cut back my insulin levels by 50%. And that leads me to my nutrition question. I see very little discussion among fitness professionals like yourself concerning special diet considerations for diebetics. I am a Type II insulin diebetic and losing weight is a very slow process for me. I don’t mind that so much, but sometimes the nutrition advice given just isn’t applicable for me. Any suggestions for clients like me? Again, thanks.

Dr. K,
What do you think of the hip to waist ratio verses BMI?
Will
Can you guys comment on Jorge Cruise’s dietary recommendations. He is currently the most popular “diet” writer in the country. I believe he focuses more on eliminating most sugar (particularly “hidden sugars”) from your diet. You can actually get a free PDF outlining a week-long menu on his site. Curious what you have to say!
cool video its good to see even the best get tired! As for the nutrition i think its a great plan there is so much speculation and hype in the food industry some honest factual answers from a respectable and trusted source would be great..i am no different from others here i dont do soda’s or rubbish foods,i slip up now and again but i try to improve my diet constantly my problem is making sense out of ingredients like on yoghurts…i want to eat better but am i being sabotaged by false information ?who can you trust its all about the money the consumer seems to have been taken out of the equation looking forward to hear what you have to say ….
haha – thanks Steve – yeah, it’s all about momentary muscular failure – makes all the difference
You’re going to love what Isabel has to say – stay tuned for a great video tomorrow that will shed some serious light on a lot of these issues.
You’ll never see me cloud my judgment for money – no way, no how…. that’s just not why i got into this (although it’s very nice to make a living creating and promoting trustworthy sources that help others improve their health. I feel very fortunate for this, and I’ll always protect you, no matter what – in fact, I’ve turned down 4 programs this week alone, just b/c they weren’t ‘worthy’, so to speak.)
Sure…. actually, Jorge Cruise is a gentleman – I had the pleasure of meeting him in person a year or two ago… he does a nice job of expressing science in understandable terms and helping others believe in the ‘impossible,’ so to speak.
Eliminating sugars was one of my big secrets for training for the Double Edged Fat Loss DVD’s (coming out soon!)
Now…. Jorge takes this to an extreme, but remember that extreme seems to be what everyone wants. 5g of sugar and 15g of carbs (I believe those are the exact numbers, but it’s been awhile since I’ve read his stuff) will cut weight quickly, but it doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for food creativity. That said, it does create rapid results, provided that you feel comfortable sticking to the diet. I think you’ll be pleased to learn how many intricate details Isabel puts into her program – it’s opened my eyes SO much
Glad you brought this up – it’s very important – they both are. Waist:hip should be less than 0.8 for women, and less than 1.0 for men according to the American College of Sports Medicine in order to reduce the risk of cardiac disease. (this depends on age, but this is the ‘average,’ so to speak.)
I appreciate you letting your friends know about these workouts. I’m here to help – thanks for your help in spreading the word.
80 pounds?! that’s outstanding!
I’m so, so, SO proud of you. Feel free to send some before/after pictures so we can inspire others with your story – imagine what that will do to change lives – I’m excited just thinking about it
As for diabetes – yes, I plan to address this in great detail. My mother is a diabetic, so this is near and dear to me. Ultimately, the most difficult part is the sugar fluctuation as you initiate a new diet program, but the principles can and should be the same. I don’t really subscribe to the ‘diabetic diet,’ but I also think that cheat days can be dangerous if some aspects aren’t observed. I think you’ll be really pleased to hear about insulin resistance through Isabel’s program… but ultimately, be sure to get some direct advise from an R.D. in your area and run the recommendations through at least 2 doctors before you make your decision.
I may produce a report on this if I can see at least 50 people request it… If you have friends in your same position, let them know to get up here and comment, ok?
Also, if I remember correctly, you also have low back pain? It may be that this needs to be fixed first… I know I’ve offered for you to come into my facility, considering you’re not far away, but time is always tight I imagine… one thing is for sure, don’t give up
It may be a good idea to work on intensity and participate in a high end coaching program where things can be more customized to your needs…. it really is a simple formula once you figure out the specific formula for your body – I don’t mean to disqualify your efforts… I felt the same way at one point – just keep your head up and believe in the only path you’re heading towards – success.
You’re welcome. This is a GREAT question. Actually, yes, Isabel will get more into the specific allergies your body probably has… also, Asthma & Allergy docs have food intolerance tests, as well as dieticians in hospitals… that said, I’ve found great success with BioEnergetic Testing, which is available in some nutrition offices.
Hope these suggestions help. I’ll keep your question in mind and keep producing more info here as needed…. you’re important to me
That’s a great question Kym – and thanks for your vote of confidence.
You’re going to be pretty stoked with an announcement I’ll be making this week – hint: personal interaction with Isabel, herself… better to get it from the horse’s mouth (Isabel, didn’t mean to call you a horse…hehe)
I’ll be sure to f/u with Isabel and see if we can’t get her to answer some of these questions for you in person in the next week or so… she’s a busy woman, but she loves ‘nutritional challenges’ like this, and she’s so generous I can’t imagine these questions will go unanswered for those who prove they’re serious about their nutrition… stay tuned!
As for the combination of 5 meals/day, this I do NOT recommend. If you miss a meal, don’t just tack it onto the next one – not a good idea… I’d much rather see you figure out ‘on the go’ snacks and then eat meals over this… that will result in a food crash that kills energy levels and sabotages your exercise program.
Soy isn’t that great for you – Mike Geary and Isabel taught me this (more to come on Mike soon – the guy’s a genius and a GREAT friend – you’re going to love him!)
How’s your Tofu consumption? beans? vegetarian protein shakes for on-the-go meals?
As for portion control, do you think that you can do it for a little while and then start comparing portion size to fist size? That works well for me…. 1/2 of a fist of carbs, 1 fist of protein, 1/3 of a fist of fats… I like that ratio for high energy and super workouts…. you may find that to be helpful. I initially took this advise from the Zone Workouts many years ago and I’ve since modified it quite a bit, but the principle is solid.
You’re welcome
Oh, and the calorie thing matters, but the right nutritional sources make all the difference. I eat about 3000-4000 calories a day and stay lean… it’s doable, but the calories need to be the right ones.
Interesting perspective. I’m very familiar with this argument. I agree and disagree.
I’d rather live lean and be 10% bodyfat and be considered obese according to the charts for many reasons, rather than be the same BMI and be 35% bodyfat.
That said, the American Heart Association, and the American Vascular Society continue to produce extremely convincing studies showing that the risk for early mortality is the same. Quality of life? Clearly, very different…
Also, if I get too strong, my joints hurt – this is mostly genetic, but my body doesn’t want the extra weight. All sides need to be considered, my friend
Great questions – first, the studies that quote that, to the best of my knowledge, do not offer the same portion control we are suggesting here. Also, this depends on SO many factors – lifestyle, work habits, exercise habits, type of food consumed, intestinal toxin build up, etc.
There are WAY too many confounding variables to say that your metabolism is slowing due to ‘constant digestion’ – I remain unconvinced and consistently see significant better results…. think about it, would you rather enter into food coma or split up meals and digest a bit all day as you fuel your system for what’s to come?
Ahhh…. one pull up, Marilyn. I remember those days – There’s a whole lot of technique here that makes all the difference – starts with lat control – anyone else interested? Maybe I’ll do some follow-up on this at a later date…
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s video from Isabel – it’s GREAT!
Ulcerative colitis is nasty – this happens to be common in my family. Although I cannot personally offer any specific recommendations here (goes beyond my license as a PT), I do understand that grains are very difficult, as well as large amounts of nuts or acidic foods/liquids. I hope some/all of these suggestions will help you, and I’d encourage you to visit with your local and most reputable GI doc
Yes, this all matters Katrina. Very excited to hear you’re joining our team here and helping change lives.
Please pay special attention to Joel Marion, Mike Geary, and Isabel de los Rios. I’d buy all of their programs if I were you. This will make an enormous difference and guide you in the right direction.
I’ve been trying to find a moment to THANK YOU for the book you sent me – that was very thoughtful – it blew me away to receive a book all the way from Israel – you’re too kind (just received it about a week ago, fyi, but I’ve been traveling since)
Yes, couldn’t agree more. Playing detective with your own body is the path to ultimate wellness and health success.
One pull up? You’ll be there before you know it – speak up if you all want to hear more on this topic…
IBS can be brutal – have you started consuming probiotics? Isabel is going to share some really cool stuff with you here… I think you’ll find it invigorating to find out there’s a great solution
Great Lucky – thanks for letting us know – more to come on this soon. Some vegetables actually increase the release of vitamins and minerals when you cook them. Others lose their nutritional value. Very interesting stuff – Isabel explains this extremely well.
Nick’s advise on pull ups is outstanding… I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve as well here and I’m sure you’ll be able to see big results soon.
There’s definitely a role in combining Isabel and Jon’s books – pretty powerful stuff when you put it all together – I’ll actually be featuring Jon pretty soon, so we’ll get more into this at that point when everyone is a bit more familiar with his theories. They are both industry experts.
Actually, lots of women are now learning to do chin ups, but you’ll be part of a great and very elite class when you do too. Who else is in??
As you’re about to learn with Isabel’s program, cleaning up your diet is #1 to relieve this…. most foods that you are sensitive to now will no longer have the same effect.
Too many people suffer from the same symptoms you do – thanks for sharing.
First of all, you already ARE an example for your family. Stay committed.
Yes, spreading meals out is important. Hydration is important.
Also, eating what a lot of people think is right actually isn’t – it’s a shame there’s so much misinformation out there…. that’s why I’ve invited Isabel into our circle this week. She’ll definitely help clear a bunch of this up for you…
Cheryl
Love your posts. Can’t wait to see what is next. I have been exercising for about 5 months and have been successful in toning. I am not as disciplined as I should be, most of my friends hang out at a wine shop and alcohol is a factor on the weekends. I am 46, female, 5’3″ and 152 pounds. I lost 5 pounds right off the bat but have been stuck for about 3 weeks. I really want to get down another 5-10 pounds. Really looking forward to the food discussion tomorrow. I have to get into a swimsuit over 4th of July and would love to get where I want to be by then. I’ve got just under a month, it should not be this difficult. Again, really love the encouragement. Thank you,
Thanks for another great video! I have a pull up bar now, but have to do them standing on a chair to take most of my weight.. am Sure that will get there one day! Nice to hear there are other vegetarians out there, tho it does make me suspicious of diet advice about non-vegetarian diets, & to rely on my own diet ideas a lot. I have just done my 2nd week 11B workout, & about to eat chestnut pancakes! Cheat days are tops!! Cheers!
Michael
Hey, Dr. K.
Awesome video; no need to be so hard on yourself. As far as I could see, you did all the pull-ups in good form; you just ran out of breath towards the end.
Say, did you get my e-mail about the push-up?
If not, take a look at the Comments Section of your push-up video, and it should be there.
I really want your feedback on that.
Congrats on getting your site fixed: those hackers really had me worried.
Very best regards,
Mike

Dr. K.,
If that’s an embarrassment I’m glad I don’t get embarrassed easily because I would have gotten half way across those bars and fallen. Great information as usual and I’m always excited to get nutritional data. Raw versus cooked is always an interesting topic so I’m looking forward to that too.
